The institution
Cardiff Metropolitan University (UWIC) offers the opportunity to study in one of Europe's most dynamic and cosmopolitan capital city locations, without the high cost of living of most cities - plus Wales' beautiful coast and mountains are on the doorstep. The city is young, prosperous and vibrant, full of character and atmosphere with a range of first class facilities for sport, nightlife, shopping and sightseeing.
We pride ourselves on having a strong reputation in applied research and active engagement with business and industry and can offer students a wide range of first-class taught courses and unique research opportunities across our five academic schools. Postgraduates make up 23 percent of our total student population - amongst the highest proportion of all Welsh universities.
We offer facilities of the highest standard to our students and staff. Across all campuses we offer first class libraries and learning centres, print studios and support services. Our aim is to provide students with a safe and supportive learning environment.
Autumn 2010 saw the opening of a brand new, state-of-the-art, Cardiff School of Management building at the Llandaff campus which will include a dedicated personal mentoring suite and first class facilities for researchers and postgraduate students. 2009 also saw the opening of the £4.9m Food Industry Centre which will include dedicated postgraduate research facilities. Student facilities, learning centres and the provisions within the university are constantly being updated and reviewed to make sure student satisfaction is not just met but exceeds expectation.
Library users have direct access to an overall stock of approximately 270,000 books and 1,000 journals. We also run the UWIC Rider, a dedicated bus service, running between halls of residence, teaching campuses and the city centre.
Llandaff and Cyncoed provide excellent sporting facilities for those who want to stay in shape and the Students Union, who opened their brand new, state-of-the-art Campus Centre at the Cyncoed campus in October 2009, offer students the chance to sign up to a variety of sporting societies and clubs.

Research
The University engages in research that is at the interface of new knowledge creation and its application and can offer a wide range of opportunities at MPhil and PhD level. The research, therefore, has direct application in business, industry, the professions and the community at large.
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 70 percent of the art and design related research submitted and 25 percent of sport and tourism research was rated as 'internationally excellent' or 'world leading'. A further two thirds of sport and tourism research was also ranked as being of international standard.
We are home to a number of centres of excellence, which undertake research and consultancy work. These include the National Centre for Product Design and Development Research (PDR), the Wales Food Industry Centre, the Welsh Centre for Tourism Research, the Wales Applied Health Research Unit and the Centre for Performance Analysis.
